Tasapainottelussa, commonly referred to as balancing in English, is a fundamental human ability involving the maintenance of equilibrium against gravity. This skill is crucial for a wide range of activities, from simple everyday movements like walking and standing to complex athletic performances and specialized professions. The human body achieves balance through a sophisticated interplay of sensory information and motor responses.

The vestibular system, located in the inner ear, plays a primary role by detecting head movements and orientation relative to gravity. Visual cues from the eyes provide information about the environment and one's position within it. Proprioception, the sense of body position and movement, originates from receptors in muscles, tendons, and joints, constantly informing the brain about the limbs' and trunk's spatial arrangement.

When the brain receives this sensory input, it orchestrates a series of subtle muscle adjustments, known as postural adjustments, to counteract any destabilizing forces. These adjustments are often unconscious and occur continuously to maintain an upright posture. Variations in balance can be observed across individuals and can be influenced by factors such as age, physical fitness, and certain medical conditions.
