The primary goal of content moderation is to maintain a safe, respectful, and legally compliant online environment.

Content moderation can involve various tasks. Moderators may identify and remove hate speech, harassment, misinformation, illegal content (such as child exploitation material or incitement to violence), spam, and material that violates copyright. The process can be automated using algorithms and artificial intelligence, or it can be performed manually by human moderators. Often, a hybrid approach is employed, where automated systems flag potentially problematic content for human review.

The challenges of content moderation are significant. The sheer volume of user-generated content makes comprehensive manual review difficult and resource-intensive. Automated systems can struggle with nuance, context, and the rapid evolution of online language and tactics used to bypass filters. Furthermore, defining what constitutes objectionable content can be subjective and vary across different cultures and jurisdictions, leading to debates about censorship and freedom of speech.
