Tarneahel

Tarneahel is a coastal city in the fictional continent of Thaloria, located on the delta of the Nere River where it opens into the Great Gulf. The name Tarneahel derives from Tarnean roots tar—shore and nehel—wealth, reflecting its historic role as a trading hub.

Historically, Tarneahel was founded by seafaring merchants around 1100 BCE and developed as a regional port during the Maritime Era. It grew under the umbrella of the United Provinces of Thaloria, later gaining local autonomy. The city’s fortifications were rebuilt after a 15th-century siege, shaping a walled core with ramparts and arcaded markets.

Economy and society: Today Tarneahel remains a major port city and commercial center. Its economy emphasizes logistics, shipbuilding, textiles, glassware, and spice trade. The waterfront hosts the Tarneal Market, a large open-air commerce district that operates year-round. The city is known for its multilingual trading community and for the Tarneal Academy, a higher education and research institution.

Architecture and culture: The city preserves a blend of basalt walls, white limestone facades, and ogee arches. Landmarks include the Gate of the Moon, the Temple of Luma, and the Bridge of Echoes. Cultural life centers on maritime festivals, the Tide Festival, and markets that run daily along the quay.

Governance and demographics: Tarneahel is the capital of the Tarneal Department, governed by a mayor and a council of guild representatives. It has an estimated population around 180,000 and hosts several cultural districts and museums.
