Tarist is a fictional ethnocultural group created for world-building and literature. The term refers to the people, their language, and social practices in a highland region of the imagined world.

The name Tarist derives from the self-designation Tar, meaning “ridge dwellers,” plus the ethnonym suffix -ist. This etymology reflects a sense of belonging tied to the mountainous landscape that defines much of their territory.

Tarists inhabit the Tarian Highlands, a mountainous plateau with scattered valley settlements. The population is organized around small rural communities that maintain local markets, production workshops, and ceremonial centers.

The Tarist language belongs to the Tarric language family. It features agglutinative morphology and a syllabic script used in inscriptions, records, and schoolbooks. Bilingualism with neighboring tongues is common in border areas.

Social life centers on guilds for metalwork and textiles, along with clan lineages and a council of elders. Although gender roles are traditional, women actively participate in crafts, trade, and community decision-making, especially in ceremonial contexts.

Religious practice emphasizes ancestor rites and a sky deity, with communal ceremonies for harvests, rites of passage, and seasonal transitions. Sacred sites include highland springs, caves, and terraces that are linked to genealogies and memories of the ancestors.

Historically, Tarists formed a network of trading towns and agrarian settlements, coordinating through councils and kinship ties. In the modern fictional setting, they maintain regional markets, archives, and museums that preserve languages, crafts, and oral histories.
