Tarevikten

Tarevikten is a term used in logistics and packaging to denote the tare weight of a container or packaging, i.e., the weight of the empty package without its contents. The concept is used to separate the weight of goods from the weight of their packaging, enabling accurate determination of net and gross weights in transactions and inventory.

Etymology and scope: The word combines tare, meaning the packaging weight, with vekt (weight) in several Scandinavian languages, yielding forms like tarevikten. In practice, tarevikten is determined by weighing an empty container under standardized conditions, and is updated whenever packaging materials change.

Measurement and calculation: Net weight equals gross weight minus tarevikten. For example, a boxed item with a gross weight of 25 kg and a tarevikten of 3 kg has a net weight of 22 kg. In multi-item shipments, tarevikten for each container is summed to yield the total tarevikten.

Applications and relevance: Tarevikten is essential for invoicing, shipment planning, and regulatory compliance in warehousing and freight. Accurate tare measurements reduce errors in pricing, ensure compliance with weight-based regulations, and support packaging optimization to minimize waste.

Limitations: Tarevikten can vary with temperature, moisture, and wear of packaging, and must be periodically verified to maintain accuracy.
