This method involves angling the toothbrush bristles at a 45-degree angle towards the gum line. The bristles are then gently vibrated in short, back-and-forth strokes, allowing them to reach into the sulcus, the small pocket between the tooth and the gum.

Another common technique is the modified Bass method, which adds a sweeping motion away from the gum line after the vibrating strokes. This helps to remove dislodged plaque. Other techniques include the Fones method, a circular brushing motion often recommended for children, and the Stillman method, which involves placing the bristles against the gum line and rolling them down the tooth surface.

Regardless of the specific technique, key principles include brushing all surfaces of the teeth: the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces. It is also important to brush the tongue to remove bacteria that can cause bad breath. Brushing should be done gently to avoid damaging gum tissue or tooth enamel. Dentists typically recommend brushing for at least two minutes, twice a day, using fluoride toothpaste. Electric toothbrushes often have built-in timers and oscillating or sonic heads that can aid in effective cleaning.
