A Tankfüllstandsensor, or fuel level sensor, is a device used in vehicles and other applications to measure the amount of liquid fuel in a tank. Its primary function is to provide an accurate reading of the fuel level to the vehicle's onboard computer or a dashboard gauge, allowing the driver to monitor fuel consumption and know when to refuel.

There are several types of fuel level sensors. One common type is the float-type sensor, which utilizes a float that rises and falls with the fuel level. This float is attached to a variable resistor or potentiometer, and its position translates into an electrical signal representing the fuel level. Another type is the capacitive sensor, which measures the change in capacitance between two electrodes as the fuel level varies. This method is often more robust as it has no moving parts. More modern systems may also employ ultrasonic or magnetic sensors.

The data from the fuel level sensor is crucial for various vehicle systems. It informs the fuel gauge on the dashboard, enables the engine control unit (ECU) to calculate remaining range, and can trigger low-fuel warning lights. In some advanced systems, it might also contribute to fuel economy calculations and diagnostic routines. Regular calibration and maintenance of the fuel level sensor are important to ensure accurate readings and prevent potential issues like inaccurate fuel gauge displays or unexpected fuel warnings.
