Tandköttsrecession

Tandköttsrecession, or gum recession, is a condition where the gum tissue surrounding the teeth wears away or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth or the root of the tooth. This can lead to various dental problems.

The most common cause of gum recession is periodontal disease, an infection of the gums and bone that support the teeth. Aggressive brushing or flossing, genetics, hormonal changes, insufficient oral hygiene, and teeth grinding can also contribute to the problem.

Symptoms of gum recession can include a visible change in the gum line, lengthening of teeth, sensitivity in the teeth, and sometimes pain or discomfort in the gums. In more severe cases, the exposed tooth root can lead to cavities.

Diagnosis is typically made by a dentist during a routine examination. The dentist will measure the depth of the gum pockets and look for signs of recession.

Treatment options depend on the severity of the recession and its underlying cause. Mild cases may be managed with improved oral hygiene practices and professional cleaning. More advanced cases might require scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar. In severe instances, surgical procedures such as gum grafts may be necessary to restore the gum tissue. Prevention is key, and maintaining good oral hygiene, using a soft-bristled toothbrush, and visiting the dentist regularly are crucial steps.
