Talletuksentekijöitä

Talletuksentekijöitä, known in English as deposit multipliers or deposit makers, refers to entities or factors that increase the total amount of deposits held by financial institutions. In a simplified view of the banking system, when a bank receives a new deposit, it does not simply hold onto that cash. Instead, a portion of the deposit is kept as a reserve, and the remainder can be lent out. This lending process is a key mechanism through which talletuksentekijöitä operate.

The most direct form of talletuksentekijöitä are new funds entering the financial system. This can be through individuals and businesses depositing their earnings, investments, or savings. Central bank policies also play a significant role. When a central bank injects liquidity into the banking system, for instance, through open market operations, it effectively increases the reserves available to commercial banks, which can then lead to an expansion of lending and thus, indirectly, to further deposits being created as loans are repaid and re-lent.

The concept is closely related to the money multiplier effect in economics. In this model, an initial deposit can lead to a larger total increase in the money supply. Banks are legally required to hold a fraction of their deposits as reserves, known as the reserve requirement. The remaining funds can be lent out. When these loaned funds are deposited into another bank, a similar process occurs, creating new loans and deposits. The theoretical maximum increase in the money supply is determined by the inverse of the reserve ratio. Therefore, anything that increases the availability of funds for lending or encourages people to deposit money into banks can be considered a talletuksentekijä. Conversely, factors that lead to a withdrawal of funds or an increase in the reserve requirement can act as talletuksenvähentäjiä (deposit reducers).
