Takahypofyysistä, also known as the posterior pituitary gland, is a crucial endocrine gland located at the base of the brain. It is not a true gland in the sense that it produces its own hormones. Instead, it stores and releases hormones that are synthesized in the hypothalamus, a region of the brain situated directly above it. The posterior pituitary is an extension of the hypothalamus and is connected to it by a bundle of nerve fibers called the pituitary stalk or infundibulum.

The two primary hormones released by the posterior pituitary are antidiuretic hormone (ADH), also known as vasopressin, and oxytocin. ADH plays a vital role in regulating water balance in the body. It acts on the kidneys, increasing the reabsorption of water, which helps to concentrate urine and prevent dehydration. Oxytocin has a more diverse range of functions. In women, it stimulates uterine contractions during childbirth and the release of milk during breastfeeding. In both men and women, oxytocin is involved in social bonding, trust, and sexual reproduction.

Disruptions in the function of the posterior pituitary can lead to various medical conditions. For instance, a deficiency in ADH can cause diabetes insipidus, characterized by excessive thirst and the production of large amounts of dilute urine. Conversely, excessive release of ADH can lead to the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), resulting in water retention and dangerously low sodium levels in the blood. Problems with oxytocin release are less commonly associated with specific diseases but can impact reproductive processes and social behavior. The posterior pituitary's close connection with the hypothalamus highlights the intricate interplay between the nervous and endocrine systems in maintaining bodily homeostasis.
