Tajikiska

Tajikiska, or Tajik (Tajiki Persian), refers to the variety of the Persian language spoken in Tajikistan and by Tajik communities elsewhere. It is classified as Western Persian, within the Iranian branch of the Indo-Iranian language family. Tajik differs from Iranian Persian in pronunciation, some vocabulary, and its traditional writing system in Tajikistan, while remaining mutually intelligible with other Persian varieties.

Geographic distribution and status: In Tajikistan, Tajik is the official language used in education, government, media, and daily life, with Russian continuing to play a significant role in business and science. In Afghanistan, the closely related Dari-Persian variety is the dominant Persian dialect, and Tajik communities are primarily associated with Tajikistan. There are smaller communities of Tajik speakers in Uzbekistan, Russia, and other countries, often formed through migration and diaspora networks.

Script and standardization: In Tajikistan, Tajik is written in the Cyrillic script, a legacy of Soviet-era language policy, with local standards and vocabulary evolving since independence. In Persian-speaking areas outside Tajikistan, the Perso-Arabic script is typically used. Modern Tajik literature spans classical Persian poetry influences and contemporary prose and journalism, and education promotes standardized Tajik vocabulary and spelling to support national identity and literacy.

Linguistic status: Tajikis are generally bilingual or multilingual, often fluent in Russian or other regional languages. The language plays a central role in national culture, media, and education in Tajikistan, while maintaining strong ties to the broader Persian literary and linguistic tradition.
