Practically, tabletsoften may involve two main modalities: coatings or films that become pliable upon contact with saliva or body fluids, and pre-swelling or disintegrant systems that hydrate quickly after ingestion to facilitate breakup. The coatings often employ moisture-sensitive polymers and optional taste-masking agents, while the disintegration approach relies on superdisintegrants, porous matrices, and hygroscopic excipients.

Applications include improving swallowability for pediatric and elderly patients, aiding patients with dysphagia, and enabling smoother administration of high-dose or large tablets.
