Frequency, a fundamental property of periodic phenomena, indicates how often a repeating event occurs per unit of time, typically measured in Hertz (Hz). Various techniques exist for determining this value, each suited for different applications and signal types.

One common method is direct counting. This involves using a counter to tally the number of cycles of a waveform within a precisely defined time interval. The frequency is then calculated by dividing the total count by the duration of the interval. This approach is effective for signals with stable and well-defined periods.

Another technique is the heterodyne method, often employed for high-frequency signals. This involves mixing the unknown frequency with a known reference frequency. The resulting difference frequency, which is easier to measure, can then be used to determine the original unknown frequency. This is particularly useful when direct counting would be too challenging due to the high speed of the signal.

Phase-locked loops (PLLs) also play a role in frequency measurement. A PLL can lock onto an incoming signal's frequency and then output a signal at that same frequency, often with improved stability or at a different power level. By measuring the output of the PLL, the original frequency can be ascertained.
