TIMPed

TIMPed is a framework and protocol for attaching verifiable, tamper-evident timestamps to digital artifacts in order to preserve integrity and provenance across storage, processing, and transmission systems. By combining cryptographic hashing with trusted time-stamping and, in some implementations, anchoring to public ledgers, TIMPed aims to provide a durable record of when data was created, transformed, or received, and by whom.

Core components typically include a mechanism to compute a hash of the artifact, a time-stamping service that signs the hash to produce a timestamp token, and a provenance record that logs custody events, transformations, and access. Origins and use of the term TIMPed appear in academic and professional discussions of data integrity and digital preservation from the mid-2010s onward. While not tied to a single universal standard, TIMPed concepts intersect with established technologies such as the Time-Stamp Protocol (RFC 3161), cryptographic signatures, and provenance models like the W3C PROV data model. In practice, TIMPed is implemented within digital archives, scientific data management, legal documentation, and supply-chain tracing to support reproducibility, accountability, and compliance.
