Türdichtheit refers to the ability of a door to prevent unwanted air leakage. This is a crucial aspect of building design and energy efficiency, as uncontrolled air flow can lead to significant heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. Proper door sealing contributes to a more comfortable indoor environment and reduces the demand on heating and cooling systems, thereby lowering energy consumption and costs.

The concept of Türdichtheit is related to the overall airtightness of a building envelope. While a door might be well-constructed, its effectiveness in sealing is dependent on various factors. These include the quality of the door itself, the proper installation of the door within its frame, and the integrity of the surrounding wall structure. Gaps and cracks around the door frame or between the door and its frame are primary pathways for air infiltration and exfiltration.

To achieve good Türdichtheit, manufacturers and installers utilize specific materials and techniques. Weatherstripping, which are flexible seals applied around the perimeter of the door and frame, are commonly employed. Door sweeps, installed at the bottom of the door, help to seal the gap between the door and the threshold. In more demanding applications, such as in passive house construction or soundproof rooms, specialized high-performance seals and airtight door systems are used. Testing methods, such as blower door tests, are used to quantify the airtightness of a building, including the contribution of doors.
