Sökmaskiner, often referred to as search engines, are software systems designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. When a user enters a query, typically in the form of keywords or phrases, a search engine analyzes its index of web pages to find those that best match the query. The results are then presented to the user in a ranked list.

The process involves several key stages. First, web crawlers, also known as spiders or bots, systematically browse the web, following links from one page to another. These crawlers collect data about the content of each page they visit. This data is then processed and stored in a massive database called an index. When a user performs a search, the search engine queries this index, not the live web.

The ranking of search results is determined by complex algorithms that consider numerous factors. These factors can include the relevance of the page content to the search query, the authority and reputation of the website, the user's location, and their search history. The goal is to provide the most useful and relevant results at the top of the list. Prominent examples of search engines include Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo, each with its own unique approach to indexing and ranking.
