Sólarklukkum

Sólarklukkum are timekeeping devices that indicate the time of day by the position of the Sun. They operate on the principle that the Sun's apparent position in the sky changes predictably throughout the day. A typical sólarklukka consists of a gnomon, which is a stationary object that casts a shadow, and a dial, which is a surface marked with hour lines. As the Sun moves across the sky, the shadow cast by the gnomon moves across the dial, indicating the time.

The accuracy of a sólarklukka depends on several factors. It must be properly aligned with the Earth's axis of rotation, and the hour lines must be precisely calibrated to the local latitude and longitude. Sólarklukkum also do not account for the Equation of Time, which is the difference between apparent solar time and mean solar time. This difference varies throughout the year due to the Earth's elliptical orbit and axial tilt, causing the shadow to advance or lag behind the actual time by up to about 16 minutes. Therefore, sólarklukkum provide a measure of local apparent solar time, not the standardized time used in modern society.

Historically, sólarklukkum were the primary method of timekeeping for centuries. They were used in ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Their design and complexity varied greatly, from simple sundials to elaborate astronomical instruments.
