Såbed

Såbed, or seedbed, is a shallow, well-prepared bed used for germinating seeds or raising young plants before transplanting. In Swedish horticulture the term refers to beds that may be used outdoors or inside a protected frame such as a greenhouse, cloche, or hotbed.

Preparation is focused on creating a fine, well-drained tilth. The site should be sunny and free of weeds. Soil is loosened and broken up, and organic matter such as compost is added to improve structure and moisture retention. A smooth, level surface helps even germination and spacing.

Sowing and care involve placing seeds at the depth recommended for the species, possibly in rows or by broadcasting. A light covering of fine soil is applied, and the surface is firmed gently. The bed must be kept evenly moist, avoiding waterlogging. For earlier or warmer germination, protective measures such as cloches, row covers, or insulated seedbeds may raise soil temperatures.

Transplanting is done when seedlings have developed several true leaves. Plants may be pricked out or moved to a larger seedbed, nursery bed, or final growing site after a gradual hardening-off process to acclimate them to outdoor conditions.

Management focuses on regular weeding, careful irrigation, and protection from pests and diseases. Raised or heated seedbeds can extend the growing season and provide better warmth and drainage, while standard outdoor seedbeds suit hardy crops.
