Säärenluu

Säärenluu, known in Latin as the tibia, is one of the two long bones located in the lower leg of vertebrates, including humans. It is the larger and stronger of the two, playing a crucial role in supporting body weight and enabling movement. The tibia extends from the knee joint to the ankle, articulating proximally with the femur at the knee and distally with the talus bone in the ankle.

Anatomically, the tibia has a shaft that is slightly convex anteriorly and exhibits several notable features, such as the tibial plateau at the upper end, which articulates with the femoral condyles to form part of the knee joint. The lower end widens to form the medial malleolus, a bony prominence that contributes to the structure of the ankle joint. The tibia is characterized by a dense cortical bone surrounding the medullary cavity, providing strength and support.

The primary functions of the säärenluu include weight-bearing, movement facilitation, and serving as an attachment point for muscles and ligaments. It plays a vital role in activities like walking, running, and jumping. Fractures of the tibia are common injuries, often resulting from trauma or high-impact accidents.
