Sääntödeontologia

Sääntödeontologia is a normative ethical theory that falls under the broader category of deontological ethics. Deontology, in general, posits that the morality of an action is based on whether it adheres to a set of rules or duties, rather than its consequences. Sääntödeontologia specifically emphasizes the importance of following universal moral rules or principles.

According to sääntödeontologia, moral actions are those that conform to a rule or set of rules that are rationally discoverable and applicable to all rational beings. These rules are not derived from empirical observations of the world or from the potential outcomes of an action. Instead, they are seen as necessary truths or commands that dictate what ought to be done. A key concept often associated with sääntödeontologia is the categorical imperative, famously articulated by Immanuel Kant. This imperative suggests that one should act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.

In practice, sääntödeontologia would evaluate the rightness or wrongness of an action by determining if it violates any fundamental moral rules. For example, a rule against lying might be considered a moral duty. Therefore, lying would be considered wrong, not because of the negative consequences it might cause, but because it violates the rule itself. The focus is on the intention and the adherence to duty, regardless of the results. This contrasts with consequentialist theories, such as utilitarianism, which judge morality based on the outcomes produced by an action. Sääntödeontologia provides a framework for understanding moral obligations as inherent and binding, independent of situational factors or personal desires.
