Sättigungsfunktion is a German term that translates to saturation function in English. It is a mathematical concept used in various fields, including economics, psychology, and engineering, to describe a phenomenon where a response or effect increases with an input but eventually levels off, reaching a maximum or saturation point. Imagine a plant absorbing water. Initially, it absorbs water rapidly. However, as the soil becomes saturated, the rate of absorption slows down and eventually stops. This diminishing rate of increase is characteristic of a saturation function.

In economics, saturation functions can model consumer behavior. For instance, the satisfaction derived from consuming a good may increase with each additional unit consumed, but eventually, further consumption provides little to no additional satisfaction. This is often referred to as the law of diminishing marginal utility. Similarly, in psychology, learning curves can exhibit saturation. As an individual learns a new skill, progress is often rapid at first, but then slows down as they approach mastery.

Technically, a saturation function is a non-linear function that is monotonically increasing but has an upper bound. Common examples include the logistic function, the hyperbolic tangent function, and power functions with exponents less than one. These functions are crucial for modeling processes that do not exhibit unlimited growth and have inherent limits to their capacity or effectiveness. Understanding saturation functions helps in predicting outcomes and optimizing systems where resources or responses are finite.
