Säteilydetektorien is a Finnish term that translates to "radiation detectors" in English. Radiation detectors are scientific instruments used to detect and measure ionizing radiation. This type of radiation, which includes alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays, and neutrons, has enough energy to remove an electron from an atom or molecule.

Various types of radiation detectors exist, each suited for different applications and radiation types. Geiger-Müller counters, often simply called Geiger counters, are common and detect beta and gamma radiation. Scintillation detectors utilize materials that emit light when struck by radiation, with the intensity of the light proportional to the energy of the radiation. Semiconductor detectors, such as those made from silicon or germanium, offer high sensitivity and energy resolution, making them suitable for precise measurements. Ionization chambers work by measuring the electric current produced when radiation ionizes a gas. Neutron detectors often employ materials that, when interacting with neutrons, produce charged particles that can then be detected by other means.

Radiation detectors find widespread use in numerous fields. They are essential in nuclear physics research for studying subatomic particles and nuclear reactions. In medicine, they are used in diagnostic imaging techniques like PET scans and in radiation therapy to monitor and deliver doses. Environmental monitoring relies on these detectors to assess radiation levels and ensure safety. The nuclear industry uses them for safety inspections and to monitor radioactive materials. Security applications include detecting illicit radioactive materials at borders and in transportation. The fundamental principle behind most detectors is the interaction of radiation with matter, which results in a measurable signal that can be amplified and recorded.
