Säsongsanalyser, often translated as seasonal analysis, is a statistical method used to understand and forecast patterns that repeat over a fixed period, such as a year. This type of analysis is particularly useful in fields where cyclical behavior is common, like economics, weather forecasting, retail, and agriculture. The core idea is to decompose a time series into several components: a trend, which represents the long-term movement; a seasonal component, capturing the regular, predictable fluctuations within a year; and an irregular or random component, representing unforeseen events.

The process typically involves identifying the seasonal patterns by comparing data from the same period in different years. For instance, retail sales often show a significant increase in the fourth quarter due to holiday shopping. By isolating this seasonal effect, analysts can better understand the underlying growth or decline of the business, separate from the predictable yearly variations. This allows for more accurate forecasting, as future predictions can incorporate the expected seasonal impact.

Furthermore, seasonal analysis helps in evaluating performance. If a company's sales are up by 10% year-over-year, but the seasonal expectation was for 15% growth, it might indicate an underperformance relative to the usual seasonal trend. Conversely, if sales are down 5% but the seasonal trend is typically a decline of 10%, the company might be performing better than expected for that period.
