Säkerhetskopplingar, often translated as safety couplings or shear pins, are mechanical devices designed to prevent damage to machinery or equipment by intentionally failing under overload conditions. These couplings act as a deliberate weak link in a drive train. When the torque transmitted exceeds a predetermined limit, the coupling breaks or releases, thereby interrupting the power flow and protecting more critical and expensive components from destruction.

The most common type of säkerhetskoppling utilizes a shear pin. This is a small metal pin made of a specific material and diameter that will snap or shear when the applied torque reaches its rated shear strength. Once the pin has failed, the driven component is no longer connected to the driving component, and the machine can be safely stopped. Replacing the shear pin is a relatively simple and inexpensive repair compared to fixing damaged gears, motors, or other machinery parts.

This type of coupling allows the driving and driven shafts to rotate independently once a certain torque threshold is reached, without necessarily breaking a component. This can provide a smoother disengagement and may allow for continuous operation after a brief overload.
