Säilöntämuotojen refers to the various methods used to preserve biological specimens, such as animals, plants, and microorganisms, for scientific study, exhibition, or educational purposes. These techniques aim to prevent decomposition and maintain the specimen's structure and, in some cases, its appearance for extended periods.

Common preservation methods include fixation, where chemical agents are used to halt cellular decay and stabilize tissues. Fixatives like formaldehyde and ethanol are widely employed. Following fixation, specimens are often stored in a preservative solution, typically a dilute alcohol or formaldehyde solution, to prevent microbial growth and further degradation. For delicate structures or detailed observation, embedding in a solid medium like paraffin wax or resin is used.

Another significant preservation technique is drying, often applied to plants (herbaria) and insects. This method involves removing moisture to inhibit decomposition. Freeze-drying, or lyophilization, is a more advanced technique that removes water by sublimation under vacuum, preserving specimens with minimal distortion.

Taxidermy is a specialized form of preservation primarily used for larger animals, involving the removal of internal organs, skinning, and mounting the skin over a sculpted form to recreate the animal's natural appearance. Skeletal preparation involves cleaning and preserving the bones of an animal, often through boiling or maceration, followed by reassembly.

Microorganisms are typically preserved through methods like cryopreservation (freezing at very low temperatures) or lyophilization. The choice of preservation method depends on the type of specimen, the intended use, and the desired level of detail to be maintained. Each method has its own advantages and limitations regarding cost, time, and the degree of alteration to the original specimen.
