This concept is particularly relevant in gas chromatography (GC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

The basic idea behind säilytysaikasuhteet is that instead of reporting absolute retention times, which can vary depending on factors like column temperature, flow rate, and column age, one can use ratios of retention times. This provides a more robust and reproducible method for identifying and comparing analytes. A common practice is to compare the retention time of an analyte of interest to the retention time of a standard compound that elutes under similar conditions or to the retention time of a non-retained component (dead time).

For example, in GC, the relative retention of two compounds A and B is often expressed as alpha (α), where α = t'R(B) / t'R(A), and t'R is the adjusted retention time (retention time minus dead time). This ratio is ideally independent of minor fluctuations in operating conditions. Similarly, in HPLC, relative retention can be used to characterize different stationary phases or mobile phase compositions.
