Säikeverkko, often translated as thread network, is a type of wireless networking technology designed for low-power, low-data-rate applications. It is built upon the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which provides the physical and media access control layers. Thread networks are characterized by their mesh topology, meaning that devices can communicate directly with each other and relay messages, creating redundant paths and improving network reliability and range.

Unlike many other wireless protocols, Thread is designed for the Internet of Things (IoT). It is IP-based, allowing devices on a Thread network to communicate directly with cloud services and other IP-enabled devices without the need for a separate gateway. This simplifies network architecture and reduces latency. Security is a core feature of Thread, with built-in encryption and authentication mechanisms to protect data and prevent unauthorized access.

Thread networks are self-healing; if a device fails or a connection is lost, the network automatically reroutes traffic through alternative paths. They are also designed for low power consumption, making them suitable for battery-operated devices that need to operate for extended periods. The protocol is managed by the Thread Group, an industry consortium that promotes the adoption and development of the technology. Devices that are Thread-certified adhere to strict interoperability standards, ensuring that products from different manufacturers can work together seamlessly.
