Sähkötoimitus refers to the supply of electricity to consumers in Finland. It is a regulated sector overseen by the Finnish Energy Authority (Energiavirasto). Consumers have the right to choose their electricity supplier, and competition is encouraged within the market. This means that individuals and businesses can select from various companies offering different electricity contracts, pricing structures, and additional services.

The electricity grid itself is typically managed by a separate company, known as the grid operator. This entity is responsible for maintaining the physical infrastructure, such as power lines and substations, and ensuring the reliable delivery of electricity to all connected properties within its service area. Consumers pay two main charges for their electricity: one for the electricity itself (sähköenergia), which is purchased from a chosen supplier, and another for the use of the electricity grid (sähkönsiirtomaksu), which is paid to the local grid operator.

Electricity can be sourced from various means, including renewable energy sources like wind and hydro power, as well as fossil fuels and nuclear power. Consumers can often choose contracts that specify the origin of their electricity, with options for 100% renewable energy being increasingly popular. The transparency of pricing and the origin of electricity are key aspects of the Finnish electricity market, aiming to provide consumers with informed choices and a competitive environment.
