Sähkökitarat, or electric guitars, are stringed musical instruments that produce sound through electromagnetic pickups. Unlike acoustic guitars, which rely on their hollow bodies to amplify string vibrations, electric guitars require an external amplifier. The strings, typically made of steel or nickel, vibrate when plucked or strummed, generating a magnetic field disturbance. This disturbance is detected by the pickups, which contain magnets and coiled wire. The pickups convert the string vibrations into an electrical signal, which is then sent via a cable to an amplifier. The amplifier then boosts this signal and outputs it through a speaker, producing a louder sound.

The design of an electric guitar can vary significantly. The body is usually made of solid wood, such as alder, ash, mahogany, or maple, and can come in various shapes and sizes, with iconic examples including the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul. The neck, typically made of maple or mahogany, is attached to the body and features a fretboard with metal frets that divide the neck into semitone intervals. Electric guitars have six strings as standard, but variations with seven, eight, or even twelve strings exist.

The tone of an electric guitar can be further shaped by various electronic components, including volume and tone control knobs, as well as selector switches that allow the player to choose different pickups or combinations of pickups. Effects pedals and amplifiers also play a crucial role in modifying the instrument's sound, enabling a wide range of sonic possibilities from clean, bright tones to heavily distorted, gritty sounds. Electric guitars are central to many genres of music, including rock, blues, jazz, pop, and country.
