Szövetelhalás

Szövetelhalás, often translated as tissue necrosis or gangrene in English, refers to the death of cells and tissues within a living organism. This condition arises when the affected area no longer receives an adequate supply of oxygen or nutrients, or when it is directly damaged by toxins or infection. Various factors can lead to szövetelhalás, including severe trauma, compromised blood circulation due to conditions like peripheral artery disease, infections that produce toxins, or prolonged pressure on tissues.

The appearance of necrotic tissue can vary. It may appear pale, dry, and shrunken in some cases, while in others it can be moist, discolored (often black or dark purple), and may emit an offensive odor, especially if infection is present. The extent of necrosis can range from a small localized area to a large portion of a limb or organ.

Diagnosing szövetelhalás typically involves a physical examination, a review of the patient's medical history, and potentially imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI to assess the extent of tissue damage and underlying causes. Laboratory tests may also be used to identify infections.

Treatment aims to address the underlying cause, remove the dead tissue to prevent further spread and infection, and manage any associated complications. This can involve surgical debridement, antibiotics if infection is present, and interventions to restore blood flow. In severe cases, amputation may be necessary to save the patient's life.
