Szívkoszorúér

Szívkoszorúér is the Hungarian term for coronary artery. These are the blood vessels responsible for supplying oxygenated blood to the heart muscle itself. The heart, like any other organ, requires a constant and adequate supply of oxygen to function properly. The coronary arteries perform this vital task.

There are two main coronary arteries, the left and the right coronary artery, which branch off from the aorta, the main artery carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body. The left coronary artery further divides into two major branches: the left anterior descending artery and the left circumflex artery. These arteries form a network that covers the surface of the heart muscle, ensuring all parts receive the necessary blood flow.

Diseases affecting the szívkoszorúér, collectively known as coronary artery disease, are a significant health concern. The most common issue is atherosclerosis, a condition where fatty deposits, cholesterol, and other substances build up inside the arteries, forming plaque. This plaque can narrow the arteries, restricting blood flow. If a plaque ruptures, it can lead to the formation of a blood clot, which can completely block the artery, causing a heart attack (myocardial infarction).

Conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle are risk factors for developing problems with the szívkoszorúér. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial for the health of these arteries and the overall well-being of the heart.
