Székletinkontinencia, also known as fecal incontinence, is the inability to control bowel movements, causing stool to leak unexpectedly from the rectum. This condition can range from minor leakage of gas or liquid stool to a complete loss of bowel control. It is a common problem that can affect people of all ages, though it is more prevalent in older adults and women.

The causes of székletinkontinencia are varied. Damage to the anal sphincter muscles, which are responsible for keeping the anus closed, is a frequent cause. This damage can occur during childbirth, surgery, or due to injury. Weakening of the pelvic floor muscles, which support the bowel, can also contribute. Nerve damage affecting the signals between the brain and the bowel muscles can lead to incontinence, often associated with conditions like stroke, spinal cord injury, or multiple sclerosis. Chronic constipation that leads to stool impaction and subsequent leakage can also be a factor, as can inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and potentially tests to assess muscle strength, nerve function, and bowel emptying. Treatment options depend on the underlying cause and severity of the incontinence. These may include dietary changes to improve stool consistency, bowel retraining programs to establish regular bowel habits, and pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises) to strengthen muscles. In some cases, medications may be prescribed, and surgical interventions might be considered to repair damaged muscles or nerves.
