SystemGHS is a standardized framework for classifying and labeling chemicals based on their hazards, designed to improve global chemical safety and regulatory alignment. Developed as part of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), SystemGHS provides a unified approach to communicating chemical risks, ensuring consistency across industries, borders, and regulatory bodies.

The framework categorizes chemicals into hazard classes such as flammables, corrosives, acute toxicants, and environmental hazards, assigning specific criteria for classification. Each hazard class is further divided into categories (e.g., Category 1 for severe hazards) to reflect varying levels of risk. Labels under SystemGHS include standardized pictograms (e.g., flame for flammables, skull and crossbones for acute toxicity), hazard statements (e.g., "Highly flammable liquid and vapour"), and precautionary measures (e.g., "Keep away from heat").

SystemGHS is widely adopted in regulatory systems, including the European Union’s CLP Regulation (Classification, Labelling, and Packaging), the United States’ Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), and international trade agreements. Its implementation reduces confusion in chemical handling, enhances workplace safety, and facilitates compliance with global trade requirements. Manufacturers, importers, and distributors must comply by classifying their products, creating safety data sheets (SDS), and affixing proper labels.

The system is periodically updated to reflect new scientific findings and regulatory needs, ensuring it remains effective in addressing emerging chemical risks. While SystemGHS provides a harmonized structure, national regulations may include additional requirements or variations. Its adoption fosters safer chemical management practices and supports international cooperation in chemical safety governance.
