Syntetisaattoreiden, or synthesizers in English, are electronic musical instruments that generate audio signals. These signals are then manipulated to create a wide range of sounds, from emulations of acoustic instruments to entirely novel sonic textures. The core of a synthesizer lies in its sound generation and modulation capabilities. Sound generation typically involves oscillators, which produce basic waveforms like sine, sawtooth, square, and triangle waves. These waveforms are the building blocks of all synthesized sounds.

Once a sound is generated, it is shaped by various modules. A filter is crucial for altering the timbre of the sound by removing or boosting certain frequencies. An envelope generator controls how a sound's amplitude or other parameters change over time, often affecting the attack, decay, sustain, and release (ADSR) of a note. Low-frequency oscillators (LFOs) can be used to create periodic modulation effects, such as vibrato or tremolo, by altering pitch or volume at slow rates.

Synthesizers can be broadly categorized into analog and digital types. Analog synthesizers produce sound using analog electronic circuits, often leading to a warm and organic character. Digital synthesizers, on the other hand, use digital signal processing to create and manipulate sounds, offering greater precision and a wider sonic palette. Many modern synthesizers are virtual, existing as software on computers or mobile devices, replicating the functionality of hardware synthesizers. They have become indispensable tools in electronic music, film scoring, and sound design.
