Sylinterilaakerit, commonly referred to as sleeve bearings or plain bearings, are a type of bearing consisting of a cylindrical inner surface that supports a rotating shaft or journal. They provide radial support and enable relatively low-friction rotation when properly lubricated. The simplest form is a bearing sleeve or bushing seated in a housing, with the inner surface forming the bearing interface. They are widely used due to simple geometry, good load-carrying capability, tolerance to shaft misalignment, and cost effectiveness.

Materials vary by application. Traditional bushings are made from bronze, phosphor bronze, or babbitt-lined alloys. Modern versions may use cast iron, graphite, polymer composites, or PTFE-filled materials. Lubrication is essential and can be oil-lubricated, grease-lubricated, or solid-lubricated. In oil-lubricated designs, hydrodynamic or hydrostatic films form between the shaft and the bearing surface, minimizing wear.

Key design considerations include radial clearance, length-to-diameter ratio, and the fit between shaft and sleeve. Sleeve bearings can tolerate shaft deflections and certain misalignments, but they typically exhibit higher starting friction and wear without adequate lubrication, and they generally operate at lower speeds compared with rolling-element bearings.

Common applications include automotive engine main and cam bearings, pumps, gearboxes, electric motors, and various industrial machines. Maintenance emphasizes ensuring sufficient lubrication, monitoring wear, and replacing worn bushings or re-sleeving as needed.
