The etymology traces to swoisty in Polish, with swoistych being the genitive plural form, commonly used in scholarly descriptions such as cechy swoistych odmian. The concept emerged in early 21st-century discourse as researchers sought to name a recurring phenomenon in which marginal or rural language varieties resist standardization while coexisting with broader prestige varieties.
