Switchingstøy

Switchingstøy, also known as switching noise or switching interference, is a type of electrical noise or unwanted signal that arises from the operation of switching power supplies. These power supplies are widely used in electronic devices due to their efficiency in converting electrical power. They work by rapidly switching a current on and off at a high frequency, typically in the kilohertz or megahertz range. This rapid switching action, however, is not perfectly clean.

The abrupt changes in current and voltage during the switching cycles create electromagnetic interference (EMI). This EMI can propagate through conducted paths (wires) or radiated paths (electromagnetic fields). When switchingstøy is present, it can manifest as audible hum or whine from the device, or more critically, it can interfere with the proper functioning of sensitive electronic components within the device or in nearby equipment. This interference can lead to data errors, signal degradation, or even complete malfunction.
