Suunnistusvälineiden are essential tools for navigation, particularly in the sport of orienteering. The primary equipment includes a map and a compass. Orienteering maps are highly detailed, depicting terrain features, vegetation, and control points. They are typically drawn to a specific scale and use standardized symbols to represent these elements. The compass is used to orient the map to the terrain and to take bearings between control points.

Beyond the map and compass, other specialized equipment is often used. A compass holder, often worn on the thumb, allows for quick and easy access and use of the compass while running. A leg protection, such as gaiters or specialized orienteering trousers, helps shield the legs from rough terrain and vegetation. Some orienteers also use a route-description card, which provides further details about the control points and the terrain between them.

For electronic navigation, particularly in foot orienteering, a SI-card (SportIdent card) or similar electronic punching system is used. This card is swiped at control points to register the runner's time and presence. GPS devices are generally not permitted in competitive orienteering as they can provide an unfair advantage, though they may be used for training or recreational purposes. The choice and quality of these equipment can significantly impact a participant's performance and experience in orienteering.
