Surin

Surin is a province of Thailand located in the Isan region in the northeast. The provincial capital is Surin City. The province has a long tradition of elephant husbandry and a landscape that blends rural agricultural areas with urban centers. Its history reflects Khmer influence, which is evident in ancient temple ruins and local customs. Surin lies along Thailand’s eastern border with Cambodia.

Geography and economy are characterized by largely flat to gently rolling plains and several river basins. The climate is tropical savanna with a pronounced wet season and dry season. The economy is primarily agricultural, with rice as a staple crop, along with sugarcane, cassava, and various fruits. The Ban Ta Klang Elephant Village and surrounding rural communities highlight traditional elephant-handling practices. Natural sites such as forest parks and wildlife areas offer hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Demographics and administration: the population includes Thai and Isan communities with Khmer influences, and Buddhism is the predominant religion. Isan and Thai are commonly spoken. Administratively, Surin is divided into districts that are further subdivided into subdistricts and villages.
