Superball

Superball refers to a type of toy ball characterized by its extreme elasticity and high bounce. Typically made from vulcanized rubber, superballs are often manufactured with a proprietary process that imbues them with exceptional resilience. This results in a ball that can rebound to a significant percentage of its original drop height, often exceeding 80% or even 90%.

The history of the modern superball can be traced back to the early 1960s. Physicist Norman Stingley is credited with its invention in 1964, though credit for its commercial success often goes to toy manufacturer Wham-O, which popularized the toy under the name "Super Ball". The toy's unique properties captivated children and adults alike, leading to widespread popularity.

Superballs are generally small, fitting easily in the hand. Their surface is smooth and they come in a variety of bright colors. The high rebound property is a result of the material's ability to store and release kinetic energy very efficiently. When the ball strikes a hard surface, the rubber deforms, storing energy, and then rapidly returns to its original shape, propelling itself upwards.
