Suojelurajat

Suojelurajat, literally "protective boundaries," is a Finnish term referring to the geographic limits within which a specific protection status applies. In the context of nature conservation, suojelurajat delineate where protections and restrictions related to a protected area, habitat, or species are in force. They serve to define the scope of conservation measures and the rights and duties of landowners, authorities, and the public within those limits.

The boundaries are established by competent authorities in accordance with applicable legislation, notably the Nature Conservation Act and related regulations. They are documented and published on official maps and in regulatory texts, and are binding for landowners, residents, companies, and authorities. Changes to suojelurajat follow formal procedures and may involve surveys, consultations, and amendments to the relevant regulations.

Within suojelurajat, certain activities such as construction, forestry, mining, hunting, or other land-use changes may be restricted or require permits. There may also be exemptions for required management, scientific research, traditional livelihoods, or emergency actions. Enforcement and interpretation of the boundaries are the responsibility of the relevant authorities, with boundaries periodically reviewed as conservation knowledge and conditions evolve.

Suojelurajat are commonly connected to designated protected areas (suojelualueet) and other conservation designations, and they appear in planning documents, land-use decisions, and environmental permits.
