Suodatuskentän

Suodatuskentän, often translated as "filtration field" or "leach field" in English, is a key component of a septic system used for treating domestic wastewater. Its primary function is to safely dispose of the liquid effluent that has been treated by the septic tank. The septic tank separates solid waste from the liquid, allowing the solids to decompose. The remaining liquid, known as effluent, then flows into the suodatuskenttä.

The suodatuskenttä is typically an area of unsaturated soil, usually constructed with a series of perforated pipes laid in gravel-filled trenches or beds. The effluent from the septic tank slowly seeps out of these perforated pipes and into the surrounding soil. As the wastewater percolates through the soil, a natural biological and physical filtration process occurs. Microorganisms present in the soil break down remaining organic matter and pathogens. The soil particles trap suspended solids and further purify the water.

The design and construction of a suodatuskenttä are crucial for its effective and long-term operation. Factors such as soil type, depth to groundwater, and the expected volume of wastewater all influence the size and configuration of the field. Proper maintenance, including regular pumping of the septic tank to remove accumulated sludge, is essential to prevent the suodatuskenttä from becoming overloaded and failing. Failure can lead to sewage surfacing or contaminating groundwater.
