Suodatinkärjet

Suodatinkärjet, commonly known as filter tips, are a component found at the end of many modern cigarettes. They are typically made of cellulose acetate fibers, a type of plastic, and are designed to filter out tar and other particulate matter from the smoke before it is inhaled. The purpose of these filters is to reduce the amount of harmful substances that reach the smoker's lungs.

The development and widespread adoption of filter tips began in the mid-20th century. Initially, cigarettes were unfiltered, and the addition of filters was a significant innovation in cigarette design. Manufacturers marketed filtered cigarettes as being less harsh and potentially healthier, although scientific consensus has since established that smoking any type of cigarette carries significant health risks.

The effectiveness of filter tips in reducing the health risks associated with smoking is a subject of ongoing debate and research. While they do trap some tar, they do not eliminate the carcinogens present in tobacco smoke, nor do they prevent addiction to nicotine. Furthermore, some studies suggest that the presence of a filter may lead smokers to inhale more deeply or hold smoke in their lungs longer, potentially negating some of the perceived benefits.

Filter tips also contribute to environmental pollution. As a form of plastic waste, they are a significant source of litter and can take many years to decompose. Efforts are underway by various organizations to address the environmental impact of cigarette butt waste.
