SummBewertung is a term used in German-language texts to describe a method of evaluating an object, service, or performance by combining individual criterion scores into a single composite value. In its simplest form the method is a simple additive score: sum the scores across criteria. In more general forms, each criterion is first normalized to a common scale and may be assigned a weight reflecting its importance. The final score is the weighted sum of the normalized criteria.

Origins and scope: The approach is one of the basic techniques in multi-criteria decision analysis and is commonly referred to in German literature as eine Summenbewertung or einfache additive Bewertung. It is widely applied in settings such as product ranking, supplier evaluation, and academic or performance assessments.

Methodology: Steps include selecting criteria, choosing scales, normalizing scores, applying weights, and calculating the total. Normalization methods vary (min-max, z-score, or percentile). Weights can be equal or derived from expert judgment or statistical methods.

Advantages and limitations: The method is simple, transparent, and easy to implement, making it suitable for quick comparisons. Limitations include sensitivity to the choice of scales and weights, the assumption that criteria are commensurate after normalization, and potential masking of important trade-offs or interactions between criteria.
