Sulfaatmoodustiste refers to compounds containing the sulfate ion (SO₄²⁻) and a metal cation. These salts are formed when sulfuric acid reacts with a metal oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate. Sulfates are generally stable and often soluble in water, though some, like barium sulfate, are highly insoluble. The sulfate ion is a polyatomic anion with a central sulfur atom covalently bonded to four oxygen atoms. This tetrahedral arrangement contributes to the stability of the sulfate group.

The occurrence of sulfaatmoodustiste is widespread in nature. Gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate, CaSO₄·2H₂O) is a common mineral found in sedimentary rocks and evaporite deposits. Other sulfate minerals include barite (barium sulfate, BaSO₄), epsomite (magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, MgSO₄·7H₂O), and celestite (strontium sulfate, SrSO₄). These minerals have various industrial and commercial applications.

Industrially, sulfates are produced on a large scale. Copper sulfate is used as a fungicide and algaecide. Aluminum sulfate is employed in water purification and as a mordant in dyeing. Sodium sulfate finds use in the manufacture of detergents and glass. The environmental presence of sulfates is also significant, as they are part of the natural sulfur cycle and can be released through volcanic activity and the decomposition of organic matter. Excessive sulfate levels in water can affect taste and contribute to corrosion.
