Suguhaiguste, also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or venereal diseases (VD), are infections that are passed from one person to another through sexual contact. This contact can include vaginal, anal, or oral sex, as well as intimate skin-to-skin contact. Transmission can occur through semen, vaginal fluids, blood, and other bodily fluids.

There are many different types of STIs, caused by various bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Some common examples include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Many STIs do not cause noticeable symptoms, especially in their early stages, which makes it difficult for individuals to know if they are infected. When symptoms do occur, they can vary widely depending on the specific infection and may include unusual discharge, sores, itching, burning during urination, or pelvic pain.

The consequences of untreated STIs can be serious and long-lasting. They can lead to infertility in both men and women, chronic pelvic pain, increased risk of certain cancers, and in the case of HIV, can progress to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Prevention is a key aspect of managing STIs. Practicing safe sex, which includes consistent and correct use of condoms, is highly effective in reducing transmission. Regular screening for STIs is also important, especially for individuals who are sexually active with multiple partners or who have a history of STIs. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing STIs, preventing complications, and reducing further spread. Many bacterial STIs are curable with antibiotics, while viral STIs can often be managed with antiviral medications to control symptoms and reduce transmission risk.
