It is not recognized as a formal climate classification, but rather is employed in descriptive writing, horticulture, and ecological discussions to refer to transitional zones or microclimates where tropical warmth persists alongside subtropical seasonal patterns.

Typical aspects include warm to hot temperatures throughout the year, only moderately cool winters, high humidity, and substantial rainfall that can resemble tropical monsoon or wet-dry patterns. Precipitation and cloud cover may be highly seasonal in some areas and more evenly distributed in others, producing a mix of lush, evergreen vegetation with occasional leaf-shedding or dormancy that is not characteristic of true tropical climates.

The term is useful for discussing plant and animal communities that contain both tropical and subtropical species, or crops that grow beyond strict tropical belts in areas where microclimates allow year-round cultivation. Because there is no universal threshold, the label is inherently imprecise and varies by author or region.

As with other nonstandard geographic descriptors, it is important to contextualize subtropicaltropical within established frameworks such as the tropical climate, subtropical climate, and climate transition zones, rather than treating it as an exact category.
