Substantivised

Substantivised is the British English past participle and adjective form of the verb substantivise, meaning to turn a word into a noun or noun phrase. The process is commonly described in linguistics as nominalization or substantivization. In English, nominalization can occur by conversion (zero-derivation), by adding suffixes, or by using the resulting noun phrase in sentence syntax.

Common methods include:

- Conversion: turning an adjective or verb into a noun without altering its form, as in the rich becoming “the rich,” or a run derived from “to run.”

- Derivation with affixes: forming nouns from other parts of speech with suffixes such as -tion, -ment, -ness, or -ity (e.g., decision from decide, happiness from happy, variety from various).

The result is a word that functions as a noun within a sentence, capable of bearing determiners, plural markers, and serving as subject or object. Nominalizations can also arise from clauses or phrases, as in “the fact that he left” or “the reason for the delay,” where a larger unit is treated as a noun.
