Substantivalists

Substantivalists are philosophers who maintain that space, time, or spacetime exists as a distinct, independently existing entity, rather than being nothing more than a system of relations among physical objects and events. In this view, spacetime points and their geometric structure have ontological status independent of the material contents of the universe; the metric is a real feature of the world. This contrasts with relationism, which treats spacetime as a network of relations among objects and events and without independent existence beyond those relations.

Historically, substantivalism traces to Newton’s notion of absolute space, while critics such as Leibniz argued for relationism. In modern physics, especially general relativity, substantivalists argue that the spacetime manifold and its metric represent a real background structure that persists regardless of the presence of matter. The opposing view emphasizes that geometry is defined by physical relations.

A central issue in the contemporary debate is the hole argument, formulated by Earman and Norton, which challenges the idea that spacetime points have fixed identity independent of the fields on the manifold. Defenders of substantivalism appeal to concepts like Leibniz equivalence or to distinctions between active diffeomorphisms and the identity of spacetime points to avoid indeterminism.

Substantivalists are associated with positions such as manifold substantivalism, and have been defended by philosophers and physicists including Tim Maudlin and, in earlier periods, Newton himself.
