Subregels

Subregels (Dutch for subrules) are rules that operate as subordinate parts within a larger, primary rule. They refine, restrict, or extend the main rule and are common in legal, logical, and procedural frameworks. Subregels help manage complexity by enabling modular, context-specific specifications without rewriting the central rule.

The concept rests on hierarchical rule structures in which a general rule is decomposed into more precise conditions. Subregels may specify exceptions, eligibility criteria, or domain-specific applications, and they interact with other subregels to produce the overall behavior of a system.

In law and policy, a general provision may set a broad obligation or prohibition, while subregels define exceptions, transitional provisions, or sector-specific interpretations to clarify scope and enforceability. In mathematics and logic, inference rules can include subregels that apply only under certain premises or structures, refining when a conclusion is valid. In computer science, rule-based or expert systems use subregels to implement modular decision logic, enabling reuse and easier updates. In linguistics, subregels govern morphology, syntax, or phonology within an overarching grammatical framework to accommodate irregularities and exceptions. In games and procedures, base rules commonly include subregels to address edge cases, penalties, or different modes of play.
